How is Colocation Web Hosting Different from Dedicated Web Hosting?
Colocation web hosting is one of the three types of full-blown hosting services, the other two being the virtual private server hosting and the dedicated web hosting. In dedicated web hosting, you have a whole server to yourself (you wouldn’t have to share it with other people/websites, as in shared web hosting). In virtual private server hosting, you share the physical capacity of the server, but the function and control of this type of hosting are similar to dedicated hosting. In this respect, collocation web hosting is merely a type of dedicated web hosting since, here, you get to use the server on your own, without having to share it with other people. However, with this type of hosting, you own the server—meaning, it is literally yours.
A server used in a collocation web hosting server is located in a facility with the resources to make a website “go live.” Simply put, as in dedicated web hosting, the server is located in a data center. However, in dedicated web hosting, the server is the responsibility of the service provider, since you are merely renting the space or the server. With collocation, you are no longer renting—you have to get your own server. You have to purchase everything—the CPU, the RAM, the disk space—required by the server. Obviously, this kind of operation would require you to spend a lot of money. This is actually one of the main disadvantages of collocation web hosting; the upstart cost is high. However, once you’re done with that, the costs are much, much lower compared to what you will spend on dedicated web hosting. And since you are no longer renting the server, you have no more monthly bills to worry about. This is a wise choice if you are in this business for the long run. Why rent a server when you can own something you will use for a long period of time anyway?
The hosting capacity of collocation web hosting is similar to dedicated web hosting, obviously—full control of the server, root access, unlimited space, better performance, power over server administration. Needless to say, if you can handle dedicated web hosting or virtual private server web hosting due to the responsibilities, then this one wouldn’t be right for you either. However, if you are used to being in control (and you will need the server in the long haul), collocation web hosting is a practical choice.
One possible problem you can encounter here is server maintenance. When you rent a server through dedicated web hosting, you do not have to worry about the server since it isn’t yours. But when it is, it is your responsibility to make sure it would not malfunction or cause any trouble. And this could produce some extra costs, too, although it still remains practical in the long run, especially if you will use the server for several years.
So obviously, it is clear who should available of this hosting option. Those will temporary hosting needs are better off renting servers; those who are in this for years to come should opt for collocation web hosting.
