Webhosting plans explained
Here’s some common packages/plans that webhosting companies offer on their site, i’m gonna explain what they mean as simply as possible. I know there are lots of people that don’t know this stuff.
Shared hosting is when your website runs on the same server as many other websites, could be one hundred to many thousands. Each site shares the resources within that webserver such as RAM and CPU usage etc. Usually this is fine and runs ok, but if one of the websites is using some type of script that causes high server load which causes their site to load slowly. Then everyone elses website on that server will share the burden too. Allthough hosting companies usually pick up on this quite quickly and will either temporarily put the offending site offline or notify the owner of the issue in order to bring server load back down again. But as i say, it’s not an issue most of the time.
Reseller hosting allows clients to become webhosts and provide webhosting to others under the same account. Hence, reselling. With these reseller accounts you are usually given a control panel by the name of webhost manager (WHM). This control panel gives you the ability to create mulitple hosting accounts for anyone you like. Each account you create comes with cPanel, ftp, email etc. With a reseller account you don’t have to resell, some people might use it because they want to host multiple websites/domains with a seperate cPanel/ftp for each site.
Virtual Private Server (VPS or VDS)
A VPS is a server that has been partitioned into multiple virtual servers that each have the appearance of being a dedicated server. Each virtual server can run its own operating system and runs like a dedicated server. Maybe not as good but it’s good enough for some.
This is when a client has full root/admin access to the webserver but doesn’t nessacarily own the server. Some hosts may offer packages named self-managed or unmanaged. This is where the user has full admin to the box and has full responsibility over it.
Managed Hosting
Another dedicated server package, but in this type the user does not have full control over the server. Good for those who need a dedicated server but don’t know how to admin/maintain one.
Collocation Hosting
Interesting one this. It’s when a user actually owns the webserver, but rents the space in which it resides in the data center. The data center will provide little support if none at all. Their main service is to just provide electrics and internet access. Out of all the dedicated plans this is the most expensive.
